Introduction to Japanese Fabric Arts Workshop with Renee Johnson

"Tsumami zaiku" is a Japanese handicraft that utilizes small squares of fabric to create beautiful floral hair ornaments (kanzashi). Maiko (apprentice geisha) are often seen wearing ornate tsumami kanzashi.

In this workshop you will learn traditional techniques to create a chirimen fabric tsumami kanzashi. Traditional rice paste will be used. Students will learn how to manipulate the paste and will learn the two basic folding techniques (ken and maru) that are used in tsumami zaiku. Once mastered, these basic techniques can be used to create larger and more elaborate designs. 

Students will be able to complete a hair clip using fabric colors of their choice. If time allows students can also practice creating petals and/or create another flower of their choice. 

Students will be able to borrow the tools required and starter kits containing these tools will also be available for purchase, if desired.

No previous experience is necessary!

Students will fold small fabric squares using long tweezers as well as use rice and wheat paste. These pastes may contain gluten and may not be suitable for those with gluten/wheat/rice sensitivities.

More about Renee Johnson and Tsumami Zaiku - 

Tsumami zaiku came into existence over 200 years ago and was designated a “traditional handicraft” by Tokyo. Unfortunately, there are only a few dozen master artisans remaining in Japan and work has begun to try to preserve their knowledge before it is lost and Charlton is very lucky, we have our very own certified Tsumai Zaiku instructor right here in the area! 

Renee Johnson studied under Rei Furuya and achieved her teaching certificate from the International Tsumami Zaiku Association. She was born in Glenville, NY and resided in Rochester, NY for over 20 years. She has recently relocated back to Glenville, and we are looking forward to collaborating with her at the studio!
